Bishop Joseph Strickland's early life was marked by a strong family and community influence in Atlanta, Texas where his family were founding members of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Parish. This environment played a significant role in shaping his spiritual path.

Strickland's journey towards priesthood began at Holy Trinity Seminary in Irving, Texas. After years of rigorous theological and pastoral training, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1985 for the Diocese of Dallas. His early ministry saw him serving in various parishes, where he developed a reputation for dedication and pastoral care.

Recognizing his commitment and contributions, Pope John Paul II named him a prelate of honor in 1995, a title that acknowledges exemplary service in the Catholic Church. In 1992, Strickland pursued advanced studies in canon law at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He earned a Licentiate of Canon Law in 1994, which equipped him with the expertise to serve as the judicial vicar of the diocese upon his return to Texas. This role involved overseeing the application of church laws within the diocese, a responsibility that highlighted his legal acumen and deep understanding of ecclesiastical matters.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Strickland as the Bishop of the Diocese of Tyler on September 29, 2012. His consecration in 2012 marked a historic moment as he became the first native Texan to lead the 33-county diocese.
